The Scholarship Endowment Trust
The University of North Carolina has launched the "For All Kind" campaign, and the "Campaign for Carolina Athletics" will be a critical part of it for The Educational Foundation. Foremost among our goals in the campaign is student-athlete scholarships. A critical focus will be placed on growing the Scholarship Endowment, where gifts toward the Endowment provide a legacy of support that will touch Carolina Athletics and our student-athletes in perpetuity.
The Scholarship Endowment Trust is the foundation of Carolina's athletic scholarship program. The trust pays an approximate annual yield of 5% toward scholarship expenses. It is built through gifts of endowed scholarships, general contributions to the Scholarship Endowment Trust, and investment performance returns.
The rising cost of tuition for our broad-based athletics program presents a significant challenge. This year alone, the cost of fully covering scholarships for our student-athletes is expected to be in excess of $17 million – more than double the cost from just 10 years ago!
To emphasize the importance of meeting our primary mission of providing scholarships, The Educational Foundation will award increased points for all gifts to the Scholarship Endowment during the campaign. Contributions to the Endowment will earn a 40% bonus – 1.4 points per $100 donated!
Your Contributions at the Scholarship Level and Season Ticket Benefits
The $500,000 Scholarship level is payable over five years, with a minimum donation of $50,000 annually. The right to purchase season tickets for men's basketball and/or football is a benefit of endowing a scholarship at the $500,000 level. Upon completion of the endowment, donors must make an annual Coaches Circle contribution to maintain benefits, which are available for the donor's lifetime, their spouse's lifetime (if applicable), and may be passed down one generation.
Donors may endow a half scholarship in the amount of $250,000, also payable over five years (with a minimum of $25,000 annually); should the donor choose to activate ticket benefits associated with this scholarship, an annual Super Ram contribution is required to maintain benefits. Donors may also fund a $100,000 endowed scholarship in memory or honor of someone, payable over five years (with a minimum of $10,000 annually); the donor does not qualify for ticket or parking benefits at this level.
The impact that scholarship donors have had on Tar Heel student-athletes is far-reaching. They provide the opportunities for approximately 450 gifted student-athletes to gain a world-class education while competing for one of the nation's top athletics programs. More importantly, they equip thousands of our student-athletes to be leaders and champions for a lifetime. For most, especially those who are first-generation college attendees, it is a life-changing experience.
